As a Health and Safety Officer in Further Education, I’ve always believed that protecting our people and protecting our planet go hand in hand. While my core role ensures a safe campus environment, my true passion lies in driving environmental awareness and long-term sustainability.

I believe that real, lasting change happens when eco-friendly habits become second nature rather than just a policy on a page. By bridging the gap between safety compliance and environmental stewardship, I aim to inspire our entire educational community to think and act green every single day.

Away from work, I love spending time with my family, helping out on the family farm, and getting out into the garden.

Ann is Operations Director at leading law firm Roythornes Solicitors.  Roythornes is a firm with six offices and over 300 staff.  As specialists in helping farmers, landowners and rural businesses they have always had a close affinity with the natural environment and those helping to preserve it.

With Board level responsibility for sustainability, Ann oversees the firm’s sustainability programme covering all aspects from capital investment and procurement strategy to leading the internal Green Team who implement staff engagement projects across the firm.  Ann is a firm believer in the power of helping others on their journeys and influencing their choices and in this role has guided suppliers, landlords and others the firm interacts with to becoming more sustainable businesses.

Steve Mack has been with the Newcastle United Foundation for over 15 years and currently leads across all aspects of their Environment and Sustainability directive including, Strategy Build, Green Initiatives, Reporting and Social Action within School and Community setting. The Foundation has now moved into year 5 of calculating their Carbon Footprint using the Smart Carbon platform. Steve is an associate member of ISEP.

Driven to “Spread the Word” Steve set up the Foundation “Green Team” to assist him deliver the Foundations Green objectives using the iiE resources and supporting staff to guide them along their journey and the Foundation currently holds the Green Accreditation

I’m a PhD qualified Polymer Chemist and Chartered Environmentalist. I have been Head of Sustainability at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust for 14 years.

Prior to this I was responsible for managing the irradiation of single use instruments and packs at the biggest irradiation site in the UK, but started my career managing the manufacture of contact lens materials – including for lions and giraffes!

After a career change from tourism and hospitality to Sustainability in education Rachel graduated from Anglia Ruskin University with an MSc in Sustainability undertaken in partnership with the Eden Project.

Rachel has now been working with Gateshead College for three years as their Sustainability Lead. Rachel has an academic background in Sustainability, Geography, Biology and Economics, and her experience of working with people in different countries and cultural backgrounds has helped her to understand how all these fit together to make changes that are desperately needed in our changing world.

Rachel’s current role is to champion, promote and coordinate the holistic integration of sustainability across Gateshead College. This has included working on decarbonisation, introducing new courses and opening a circular fashion project and active travel hub.

I joined the University of Northampton in November 2020 to support the delivery of the University Travel Plan having previously worked as a Travel Plan Assessor at Northamptonshire Highways. My role has developed over the years to now a more holistic role of environment and sustainability – energy, waste, water, carbon, biodiversity and travel.

I also maintain and execute our yearly targets and action plans, as well as reporting our carbon footprint, the annual Sustainability Survey and delivering the monthly New Starter Orientation presentation.  And some nice engagement events for the staff and students too!

Laura is a veterinary surgeon and One Health Lead at XLVets, with extensive experience in sustainability leadership and iiE accreditation within clinical practice. Laura has a strong track record of embedding environmental sustainability into day-to-day operations, ensuring that practical, measurable changes are integrated across teams. Laura leads initiatives focused on One Health, an integrated approach that recognises the interconnection between people, animals and the environment, alongside efforts to reduce carbon emissions, improve resource efficiency, and promote responsible clinical decision making.

Recognised as the Greenest Vet in 2024, Laura is passionate about driving meaningful change within the veterinary sector. Laura works collaboratively with practices to develop scalable, evidence based solutions that balance high standards of patient care with environmental responsibility. Through case studies, presentations and cross-sector collaboration, Laura regularly shares practical insights and supports others in adopting sustainable approaches, helping to accelerate progress towards a more resilient, low-carbon future for the veterinary profession.
