Veterinary Defence Society

The Veterinary Defence Society Limited (VDS) is a mutual organisation that was established by veterinary surgeons in 1865 to defend and support the practising veterinary profession in the UK and Ireland. Working with the majority of the profession, the VDS defends against the effects of claims of negligence with each case being handled by a veterinary colleague experienced in claims management, defending reputations and finances against unjustified claims, and providing legal representation in criminal and disciplinary proceedings. Our unique position in the market means that we see the vast majority of complaints and claims within the profession, which enables us to tailor proactive support, guidance and training to our members to improve their performance and reduce the likelihood of mistakes. The VDS has also developed VetSafe, a members-only resource which is a confidential significant event reporting service that facilitates quality improvements and risk management in veterinary practice.
