PECT and GES Step Up for National Walking Month – An ESG Project for Staff Engagement
National Walking Month is an annual campaign by the charity Living Streets which looks to inspire everyone to get outside and enjoy the benefits of walking and wheeling more. It offers an excellent opportunity to improve our physical and mental health, reconnect with our local spaces and community, and even enjoy the nature around us.
Key Highlights
From dog walks and beach walks, to local walks through Nene Park and even slacklining, the team recorded some huge daily miles and we are delighted to have smashed the 1,500 target, with a total mileage count of 1,947 miles!
How did they do it?
This May, the PECT and GES team teamed up for a National Walking Month challenge with support from youdo, an online platform which provides a central hub for employees to engage with an ESG activity. youdo set the team a collective challenge to walk a huge 1,500 miles throughout May, with the incentive to earn a donation towards our project Forest for Peterborough.
In addition to this incentive, youdo were able to provide a weekly staff leader board, encouraging healthy competition within the team. We also asked staff to share an image from their walk, and it was great to see so many of us get involved and the beautiful landscapes around us.
With so many of us hybrid working, this challenge was a great way to encourage the team to take part in activity whilst working from home, and find out more about our staffs passions and interests. Each of us found different ways to increase our step count for the month, with sunrise and moonlit walks around work, swapping out the treadmill to walk to the gym, and even getting out for team walks during lunch times in the office.
In the future
Each of us really enjoyed taking part in the challenge, and will definitely try to keep up our steps going forwards. Whether you are looking to engage with a national campaign in your workplace, or simply want to increase your step count at home, engaging with campaigns such as this one can be a great way to build momentum and keep motivated.
