How a Small Family Run Business Won iiE Best Newcomer 2024

Howsafe Ltd is an independent, family-run business specialising in the supply of workwear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), headquartered in Peterborough. The company serves its customers through both a retail store and an online platform, offering nationwide delivery to cater to a broader audience. Over the past few years, Howsafe have been proactively incorporating eco-friendly aspects into their operations, introducing several environmentally conscious product ranges and actively sourcing items that align with their commitment to environmental responsibility. To demonstrate their commitment to uphold the highest standards of sustainability in the industry and empower customers in meeting their environmental requirements, Howsafe sought a nationally recognised accreditation.

In December 2023, Howsafe Ltd began its sustainability journey by joining the Investors in the Environment (iiE) programme. At that time, the company did not have any formal environmental policies or action plans in place. The primary objective for the first year was to develop a comprehensive Environmental Management System (EMS) and create clear, actionable environmental policies to guide future operations.

“This foundational work was crucial for integrating sustainability into our operations and setting clear guidelines for future actions.”

The task to improve

The focus was on embedding newly developed policies throughout the organisation to ensure environmental considerations became a core aspect of daily activities. Simultaneously, resource usage was measured against baseline figures established from the previous year. This ongoing measurement enabled Howsafe to track progress, identify areas for improvement, and ensure a systematic and measurable approach to achieving environmental goals. This dual strategy of policy development and continuous resource monitoring established a robust foundation for a long-term commitment to sustainability.

Additionally, efforts were directed towards creating a comprehensive and adaptable action plan that, along with the benchmark figures, would guide the organisation toward a sustainable future.

Beyond the development and implementation of policies and action plans, Howsafe’s primary focus was on reviewing waste management practices and ensuring clear communication across the business regarding waste streams.

Action – what did they do?

Despite not having formal sustainability policies in place at the beginning of 2023, Howsafe achieved Bronze Accreditation from iiE within just six months. This was a significant milestone, demonstrating strong progress in environmental management.

“We have established a comprehensive EMS to continually assess and improve our environmental performance. This includes a robust Environmental Policy, resource measurement initiatives, waste management improvements, and enhanced communication with stakeholders highlighting key environmental aspects and a net zero by 2050 commitment. The senior management team is committed to sustainability, having increased the range of ‘eco products’ and introduced a Green Procurement Policy.

We have established resource measurement baselines that exceeds Bronze level requirements, with monthly data collection. Howsafe has identified efficiency opportunities and set a 2% reduction target for each resource with action plans for electricity, water, waste, travel, paper and staff projects that are reviewed monthly. We have also calculated our carbon footprint, covering Scope 1, 2, and some Scope 3 emissions.
Our waste management plan focuses on recycling and reducing landfill waste, including switching to reusable and recyclable materials.”

What was the result?

“Though not required for Bronze, Howsafe has a travel plan to decarbonise its fleet, including introducing EV cars and using Euro 6 delivery vehicles which emit lower emissions and pollutants such as nitrous oxides. A Staff Travel Survey is planned for 2024/25.

Our Green Champion, supported by the senior management team, has been pivotal in driving sustainability efforts. We have undertaken various projects to support staff wellbeing, raise environmental awareness, and contribute to local and national charities. These efforts have helped us achieve a perfect score in the Environmental & Social Projects category during the audit.”

Staff are updated through various channels, and the company’s sustainability journey is shared with customers via monthly newsletters, social media channels, and an eco-label online and instore for environmentally friendly products to help them make more environmentally responsible purchases. Howsafe’s proactive approach highlights its dedication to continuous improvement in sustainability practices and community engagement, positioning it as an impressive newcomer in environmental responsibility.

“We are thrilled to have won the Best Newcomer (SME) 2024 award and a heartfelt thank you to iiE for this recognition and to everyone who has supported us on our sustainability journey so far. From the beginning, we embraced the challenge of driving meaningful change, believing that small actions can create a big impact. Our progress so far is a testament to the dedication of our incredible team and the collaborative efforts of our partners, united by a shared vision for a sustainable future. It motivates us to keep innovating and to continue making a positive impact on the environment.” Clark Howe, Managing Director.
