The Institution for Engineering & Technology (IET)

The IET inspires, informs and influences the global engineering community to engineer a better world. As a diverse home across engineering and technology, we have extensive knowledge and a particular view of the profession to share, meaning we help make better sense of the world in order to solve the challenges that matter. It also ensures we grow our members professionally and intellectually and informs how we set the standards for society.

We provide the evidence to keep engineering at the top of the political agenda and the insight to preserve the teaching of STEM subjects. This is why we are uniquely placed to champion engineering. We are one of the world’s largest engineering institutions, with over 169,000 members in 150 countries. We are also the most multi-disciplinary – welcoming all engineers and technicians, and all those who are touched by, or touch, the work of engineers. We change perceptions of engineering in society through thought leadership and inspiring campaigns. We educate and support young people to pursue STEM careers and are a trusted source of Essential Engineering Intelligence and a Professional Home for Life for our members.

Our charitable remit covers in excess of £1m per year in awards, scholarships and bursaries, grants, and prizes. Another of our roles is to showcase the work and value of engineers, developing best practice and providing robust, impartial information to influence policymakers and government. We also run fun and engaging initiatives in schools and “on-campus” at University to inspire the next generation of engineers, including the IET First Lego League, the IET’s Faraday Challenge, and our Present Around the World. These are a great way to excite young people and encourage them to study science, technology, engineering and maths subjects.

We support our members at every stage of their career, whether it’s developing new capabilities or perfecting established ones. And we help mid to advanced-career professionals and retirees achieve greater proficiency and support the next generation.
