Riversmeet Vets
TamworthRiversmeet Veterinary Centre was established over 100 years ago in Staffordshire and has two locations in Tamworth and Atherstone – both are RCVS accredited small animal practices. The Green Champion has worked to develop an Environmental Management System (EMS) and apply this across both sites.
Tamworth is the larger site where we have been since 1923 and is a Veterinary Nurse Training Practice. Atherstone is located in a Grade II listed former railway building dating back to 1847. The practice is open six days a week with around 30 members of staff including 8 veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses, student veterinary nurses, patient care assistants, a client care team and provides a referral service in ophthalmology and surgery.
Riversmeet Vets was sold to the Linnaeus Ltd group of veterinary practices in 2018 which was subsequently acquired by Mars Petcare’s Veterinary Health group of practices and labs. The Tamworth practice underwent a renovation in the summer of 2023.
As a practice we share a love of animals and nature and so acknowledge our work has an environmental impact, particularly around greenhouse emissions and single use plastics so we are keen to take actions to identify these aspects and take actions to minimise them.
To support our environmental aspirations, we are proud to have achieved Bronze Accreditation with Investors in the Environment.
Reductions of 13% in gas (Tamworth), 35% in Isoflurane (inhalant anaesthesia) and 25% in Paper have been achieved from 2022 to 2023. The reduction in isoflurane usage is particularly significant and follows staff training in low flow anaesthesia training.
We have also improved our waste management, following the installation of new recycling bins our recycling volumes have increased across both sites. We have made several sustainable procurement switches such as switching to washable puppy pads, eco cat litter, paper individual cremation bags and we are trialling more sustainable products for the future.
