Want to get an insight into where your business waste may be going? Curious about ways to achieve ‘zero waste’ and 100% landfill diversion rates?

Many iiE businesses target zero waste-to-landfill, diverting any waste that isn’t reused or recycled to recovery. But what exactly does ‘recovery’ mean and what actually happens to this waste?

In 2013, Peterborough City Council appointed Viridor to build a state-of-the-art energy from waste facility in Fengate to manage the city’s residual waste. By 2016, the facility opened to process 85,000 tonnes of waste each year, with additional capacity available for a growing city. The site enables the local authority to handle its non-recyclable waste in a more environmentally friendly manner, using the most efficient technologies of their kind in the country. A significant portion of the operations is dedicated to neutralise pollutants and capture 99% of particulates.

So how does it work? The heat from incineration is used to produce steam, which drives an electricity generating turbine. In addition, heat in the form of hot water or steam can be supplied to heat buildings or for use in manufacturing processes. This combined heat and power facility is the most efficient form of energy from waste, according to PCC. Even the end products, such as fly ash and other solids, find life after incineration in the form of breeze blocks and road aggregate.

The Viridor Energy Recovery Facility will provide you an insight into the volumes and types of waste they handle. Your business can also discover how energy is recovered from 90% of the waste received from households and businesses to divert it from landfill and generate energy for the National Grid.
