Carbon footprint workshop – iiE Webinar
20200623 (10:30 - 11:30)
We are already experiencing the effects of climate change and if we don’t do something soon, the impacts of climate change will only continue to worsen. The Paris Agreement’s central aim is to work towards reducing the threat of climate change by keeping the global temperature rise well below 2-degrees Celsius by reducing greenhouse gas emissions to that of pre-industrial levels. In the UK, the Government has committed to a net-zero carbon target by 2050 and is deploying a number of initiatives to help society meet this target.
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) recommends that all businesses start calculating their own carbon footprints and start making the necessary improvements to reduce their emissions; many large organisations are now required to do so through the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) requirements. It is vital that all businesses reduce their carbon emissions through changing behaviours, engaging in low carbon activities, and start choosing low carbon technologies or products – and it makes great business sense to do so, especially as many low carbon activities come with significant cost savings and favourable payback periods.
To support businesses, Investors in the Environment is running a Carbon Footprint Workshop webinar. The webinar will introduce the basic fundamentals of carbon footprinting and is aimed at organisations that are at the beginning of their carbon footprint journey, or organisations that currently use external calculators but would like to start calculating and managing their emissions in-house.
The webinar will cover:
- What are the different categories of carbon emissions – ‘Scopes’
- What is an ‘Organisation Boundary’ and a ‘Scope Boundary’
- Importance of accurate measurement and what to include
- How to convert data into greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
- How to set carbon targets
Additionally, we will briefly cover an introduction to science based targets and discuss the pros and cons of carbon offsetting. Delegates will use the data they have brought in or work with sample data to learn how to carry out a carbon footprint and understand how to set practical targets and generate actions to reduce their footprint.
Calculating your carbon footprint and producing a GHG report can have a range of benefits, including:
- Demonstrating your organisation’s commitment to climate action
- Assessing your level of environmental performance
- Comparing or “benchmarking” against other organisations
- Reducing energy and resource consumption and costs
- Improving your organisation’s reputation meeting carbon reduction targets
- Meeting your Investors in the Environment accreditation criteria!
GHG reporting is also becoming increasingly required by stakeholders including customers, shareholders, investors and regulators.
