Earsdon and Wellfield Community Association
Whitley BayEarsdon & Wellfield Community Association is situated in the middle of Earsdon Village. Formerly the village school, built in stone in 1856 by the mine owners to educate the children of the village.
The building consists of 5 classrooms, 1 kitchen and 2 blocks of toilets all connected with a central hallway.
The centre was originally heated by open coal fires.
The building ceased to be a school around 1960 and from 1965 became a community centre of one form or another up to the present day. Recently the heating is now powered by two high performance gas boilers and 38 double radiators. All lighting is now LED some of which are controlled by PIR sensors.
Although we are upgrading the building, we do not want to lose its original character of a traditional school.
The centre hosts all the traditional classes and groups plus specialised self-help groups. We also host a dance school that has been awarded Academy status.
In 2019 the centre won the VODA Organisation of the year award.
