Elswick Community Leisure Centre

Elswick Community Leisure Centre is a community run swimming pool and gym which serves the community in the West End of Newcastle.  It attracts people from all over the city and as far away as Durham and Northumberland.  Formerly a council run facility, it was closed due to cutbacks in 2015 and reopened in September 2019 as a CIO after a group of local people formed a charity and wrote a business plan which was accepted by the council for an asset transfer on a long term lease.  It offers a range of activities to all ages, religions and abilities to improve people’s health and wellbeing.  With the challenge of COVID-19 and now the energy crisis the team behind the pool are looking to develop the environmental strategy in reducing the carbon footprint, reliability on fossil fuels and ultimately making the organisation more sustainable.
