This month, the Yorkshire & Humber region has been brought into the spotlight by the eco achievements of its local businesses! A number of green-thinking organisations have been awarded Investors in the Environment (iiE) accreditation, and a selection have even received further awards in recognition of their sustainability successes.
iiE is a national environmental accreditation scheme designed to help the business sector save money and reduce its impact on the environment. The membership scheme supports and celebrates green business best practice and innovation, in order to create more sustainable companies for the future.
“Here at iiE, we’re thrilled by the fantastic achievements of our member businesses,” explains iiE Sustainability Consultant April Sotomayor. “The past year has seen rising momentum and public action on climate change, but often businesses feel at a loss to what they could do to best make a difference. iiE gives clarity and helps support organisations in taking important steps to become greener.”
This July, businesses secured Bronze, Silver or the highest level of Green accreditation, plus they discovered who had won further awards.
The region’s Great Green Star Award was achieved by Hull City Council (large business category) and LEDA (small business category). Hull City Council saw a reduction of 57% in carbon emissions since baseline year, alongside outstanding resource efficiency across their buildings and fleet. LEDA achieved a 22% reduction in carbon emissions, excellent uptake of sustainable transport, and notable progress at reducing its use of fossil fuels.
“Our Yorkshire & Humber member businesses have made some absolutely amazing environmental achievements in 2018-19,” explains April. “We can’t wait to see what else they accomplish going forwards!”
