The eco achievements of local and regional businesses have been brought into the spotlight with the East region Investors in the Environment (iiE) Awards, which were held on Tuesday 24th April at the Bull Hotel in Peterborough’s city centre.
iE is a national environmental accreditation scheme that is designed to help businesses save money, reduce their impact on the environment, and promote positive corporate social reasonability (CSR).
The iiE Awards is an annual opportunity for both members and non-members of the iiE scheme to come together to celebrate their environmental achievements over the past year and get inspired to go even further. By achieving an accolade such as the Green Award, it reflects their level of commitment to the environment and to local communities.
In 2017/18, the East region’s accredited members saved:
- 38 tonnes paper, equivalent to 640 trees!
- 6,232,000 kWh electricity, an estimated £677,000 Enough to power 1,780 homes for a year!
- 12,390,000 kWh gas, an estimated £495,000 Enough to heat 1,000 homes for a year!
- 10,320 m³ water, an estimated £1,500 Enough to fill 4 Olympic swimming pools!
- 17,700 tonnes Carbon Enough to fill Buckingham Palace over 31 times!
- 480,650 miles not driven, an estimated £72,000 Equivalent of travelling to the moon and back!
- 82% waste recycled or reused
April Sotomayor, Sustainability Consultant at iiE said, “Being part of the iiE Awards is a fantastic opportunity to see how much businesses have achieved through their environmental contributions over the past year. We’ve seen more involvement than ever in businesses supporting community and staff projects, with CSR taking a major role in the ‘giving back’ element of the scheme. People are looking for a purpose alongside profiting their business and the accreditation gives them a clear roadmap for doing so.”
During the awards, there was an opportunity for businesses to network, hear from this year’s guest speaker and founder of Hubbub, Trewin Restorick, and share best practice with other green-thinking organisations.
In addition to this, at the iiE Awards member businesses secured Bronze, Silver or the highest level of Green accreditation, plus they discovered who won further awards – such as the ‘Great Green Star’, ‘Best Green Champion’ and the ‘Overall Outstanding Achievement Award’.
iiE would like to thank Hunt & Coombs Solicitors for sponsoring the Green Award category.
