Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) is working with Greater Peterborough Partnership, Peterborough City Council, Opportunity Peterborough and many other partners towards this aspiration.
Becoming the UK’s Environment Capital will mean the city is demonstrating that it is delivering truly sustainable growth, ensuring a cleaner, greener, healthier and more vibrant Peterborough for the future.
Success in becoming the UK’s Environment Capital will be directly related to the support and actions of every resident, business and organisation in the city. The greater the support the sooner we will reach our goal: it’s down to all of us.

Did you know...?
- Peterborough is home to the largest colony of great crested newts in Europe at the Hampton Nature Reserve.
- Peterborough has one of the highest ratios of green space per person in the UK.
- 91% of Peterborough’s schools are currently Eco Schools and local teachers have now laid the challenge for 100% of schools to become Eco Schools by 2011.
- Queensgate Shopping Centre has committed to going green, cutting waste to landfill by 10% and reducing electricity consumption by 30% since 2006.
The whole city is working together to hit tough new targets in areas such as:
- Reducing Peterborough’s use of natural resources – increasing recycling, cutting waste sent to landfill and reducing water use.
- Making this the UK’s greenest city – maintaining natural habitats and providing everyone with access to natural green space.
- Creating one of the UK’s leading sustainable built environments – cutting energy use, requiring new buildings to meet targets for renewable energy use and ensuring new housing meets high standards for sustainability.
- Increasing the number of people switching to walking, cycling and using public transport- cutting use of the private car.
- Educating Peterborough’s people and businesses to make them the most environmentally aware in the UK – take our free pledge now to show your support for Peterborough's green ambitions!
- Making Peterborough the natural choice for green businesses - maintaining the city as the UK’s principal centre for environmental technology and research and getting city businesses to invest in the environment.
